Human Milk Oligosaccharide 3′-SL (3′-Sialyllactose) is an abundant sialylated HMO in human milk. 3′-SL occurs in human milk in a concentration of 0.27 (± 0.09) g/L1,2.The specific functional benefits of 3′-SL include reducing the risk of infection by inhibiting the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria e.g. Helicobacter pylori and their toxins or viruses e.g. Rotavirus3,4,5. 3′-SL and 6′-SL in particular promote brain development in infants by supplying sialic acid, an essential building block for neurons. In many animal models, supplementation with sialic acid and sialyllactose is associated with improved memory and learning skills.6,7.
