Saccharides for the Use in Pharmaceutical Products

Oligosaccharides and polysaccharides, which are also collectively termed glycans, represent the largest and most diverse group of biopolymers, and have given rise to their own research discipline, glycobiology. The development of new analytical and diagnostic reagents, as well as new approaches for the prevention and treatment of diseases, owes much to the rapid growth of knowledge in this field.

In the human body, glycans may be present in their unbound free state or as glyco-conjugates linked to proteins (glycoproteins) or lipids (glycolipids). These conjugates are often found on the cell surface and thus play an important role in molecular recognition and communication. This not only includes the ability of human cells to recognize and communicate with each other, but also their ability to detect and interact with microbes, including pathogens. Many viral pathogens use glycans as receptors, including noro-viruses, rota-viruses, influenza-viruses, coxsackie-viruses and entero-viruses, for instance. Jennewein Biotechnologie is therefore focusing on the development of products that interfere with, modulate or take advantage of glycan-based host–pathogen interactions.

Our products can also be used in the development of pharmaceutical products indicated for a variety of diseases. The abnormal glycosylation of cells is a characteristic of certain types of cancer. Clinical studies suggest that L-Fucose and 2′-Fucosyllactose can inhibit the ability of cancer cells to interact with healthy cells and could therefore reduce the risk of metastases. Furthermore, chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, colitis ulcerosa, and IgA nephropathy, could be addressed by the development of glycan-based therapeutics. Ultimately, glycans are essential for healthy development, particular the early development of the nervous system and immune system.

To support the development of novel and more effective glyco-conjugate therapeutics, Jennewein Biotechnologie offers the monosaccharides L-Fucose and Sialic acid (N‑acetylneuraminic acid) as well as selected human milk oligosaccharides.
